Direct Legal and
the Truth About Your Debt

There are a few useful things you can do to ensure that things are
difficult for them and the various tactics of Direct Legal and Collections.
You can permanently bar their number using BT's call-blocking service,
or you could record their phone conversations, you can write to them
telling them not to visit you or any combination of these actions (all
these template letters can be downloaded from the web site).
It is best to ensure you know whether or not the debt collector has
bought the debt for themselves as a means of making a profit (in the
role of a debt purchasing company) or if they are doing debt recovery
work for a third party such as a credit card issuer (where they would
pocket a percentage of recovered money). If they send you a letter of
assignment, as required by law when the account has been sold, then
you know that the debt collections agency or DCA is the owner of the
account and will try to get as much out of you as he possibly can. When
dealing with Direct Legal and Collections do remember that every penny
the debt agency gets is pure profit because he has purchased the debt
wholesale. So they will try to break you any way they can.
Assuming that you are having to cope with Direct Legal and Collections
you'll be aware of all the underhand methods they employ to get you
to set up a standing order in order to profit from your ignorance of
the law. You may already have experienced bad dealings with them on
the phone. They may call you on the phone at strange times when they
know it is inconvenient for you and do so several times every day. They
may write official appearing sternly drafted letters or cards threatening
to come round and collect the full amount or that they will take you
to court if you cannot pay. Their other strategies may include attempting
a charging order on your home or in some way cause you and your family
great personal suffering.
The law in the UK doesn't seem to care very much when all this injustice
occurs, or so it seems. Many of the debt purchasing companies that operate
in Britain are funded by overseas companies knowing a fast buck where
they can see it. There are plenty of laws that are meant to be in place
governing Direct Legal and Collections, however for some unknown reason
the debt collection companies trade by flouting the rules whenever they
think they can get away with it. They only desist when they are punished
by a body like the FSA or the OFT. And even in such rare cases the tiny
punishment they are threatened with is such a small amount of their
income that they don't really give a damn, and they will treat such
impositions with utter contempt.

and you are protected by the consumer credit laws. Click

To find out if you
qualify for an IVA or can benefit from a debt management programme,
